WHAT’S ON: K

Jakarta (The Jakarta Post/ANN) – South Korean pop star fans gathered at Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Tangerang and Bung Karno Stadium in Central Jakarta on Friday afternoon to get a glimpse of their idols.

K-pop sensations Super Junior, 2PM, SHINee, Beast, Infinite, Teen Top, Sistar and Eru arrived on Friday to perform at Music Bank in Jakarta on Saturday.

Indonesian singer Afgan and boy band S4 also performed at the event, aired live by KBS World in 73 countries.

Event promoter Asia Top Entertainment claimed tickets had sold out, and high-ranking government officials and their families also attended the show.

Saturday’s gig was part of the 2013 Korea-Indonesia Friendship Year, marking 40 years of diplomatic relationships between the two countries.

The celebration officially started on Friday with the ASEAN-Korean Festival, which was held at Balai Kartini multifunction hall in South Jakarta.

Organised by the South Korean Embassy and ASEAN-Korean Center, the festival presented chamber music, popular Korean TV dramas, and folk music from both cultures as well as traditional dances performed by the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts in Busan.

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy also presented artists who performed Indonesian traditional Indonesian music and dances.

Korean ambassador Kim Young-sun expressed hope that the cultural exchange between the nations would contribute to extending people-to-people diplomacy and tightening friendships and cooperation between the countries in the future.

“I expect Indonesian artists to share the same stage with visiting Korean artists,” he said during press conference recently on the string of events planned to commemorate the bilateral ties, which includes cultural performances, art exhibits, business forums, film screenings, lectures and other activities, all throughout 2013.

Top 5 of SBS TV ‘ K

SBS TV reality talent show ‘K-POP STAR 2’ is heading to its final rounds, and with the elimination of another contestant from the March 10th episode, we are left with the top 5 contestants.

During the show, Andrew Choi and Raccoon Boys were the first to face off. Andrew Choi did a remake of 10cm ‘I’m gonna die’ which was judged to be too perfect and without any blemish by the panel of judges, and securing 1 of the top 5 spots. Raccoon Boys didn’t want to be left behind as they performed Wonder Girls’ ‘So Hot’ but received an unfavourable response from the judges who said, “Your performances are always lacking that 2%, it’s quite a pity.” And thus Raccoon Boys lost out to Andrew Choi in the first round.

The second round pitted Akdong Musician against Shin Ji Hun. Akdong Musician who have been criticized for their vocals during their progression to the final rounds, put on an awesome performance with their self-composed song ‘Crescendo’ which was akin to the bubbly and lively stage of idol groups, and got a great response from judges. Shin Ji Hun meanwhile performed an English song ‘You Raise Me Up’ and showed off her bright high notes. But judges felt that she focused too much on her high notes and neglected to emote during the song. And thus the second round went to Akdong Musician over Shin Ji Hun.

The final round pitted Icheonwon against Bang Ye Dam once again. Icheonwon chose to sing a light-hearted and fast beat song in Sanulrim’s ‘Imp’ and also interacted with the audience. Bang Ye Dam meanwhile performed Rain’s ‘I Do’ and was judged to be unstable with her vocals, although she was pretty smooth in her delivery. As for Icheonwon’s performance, the judges concurred that although the stage was really boisterous, they were unable to let go of themselves on stage, and it was a pity.” In the end, Bang Ye Dam beat out Icheonwon to secure a place in the top 5.

In the show’s final segment which was the viewers’ poll, Icheonwon managed to secure a spot in the top 5 by getting the most number of votes from viewers. Raccoon Boys meanwhile secured the final spot in the top 5 with a ‘resurrection card’ from the judges.

And with that, Shin Ji Hun was the contestant who was eliminated and she said at the end, “Although I have been eliminated, I am still grateful to the judges who had allowed me back on stage previously.” BoA consoled Shin Ji Hun by saying, “You used dancing to enter the show, so I am looking forward to seeing more of you in future.”

Gummy, B2ST, Davichi Storm K

Female vocal powerhouse, Gummy, shakes up the K-Pop Hot 100 this week with a new digital soundtrack single, “Snowflower,” ending SISTAR19’s four week No. 1 reign to an end. B2ST and Davichi all make big moves on the chart this week with soundtrack contributions too. This week, K-Town takes a look at the figures behind what makes these singles so successful.

Gummy’s “Snowflower” is a contribution to the third soundtrack for the popular SBS drama, “The Winter, The Wind Blows” featuring Korea’s top actors Song Hye Kyo and Jo In Sung. The drama, a remake of Japanese 2008 drama titled “I Don’t Need Love, Summer,” was met with explosive anticipation even before the pilot aired as it ended both Song Hye Gyo and Jo In Sung’s long hiatus from the silver screen.  According to AGB Nielsen Media research, the drama is the highest rated Wednesday/Thursday drama, earning a 14.4% viewer rating on March 7.  Gummy’s beautiful vocals along with the song’s dramatic lyrics intensify the romance of the show and its forlorn main characters.

The main soundtrack to the drama, by vocalist The One, “Winter Love” falls to the No. 3 spot from No. 2 this week. The first soundtrack contribution by Super Junior member Yesung, titled “Carbon Paper,” is at No. 29. “The Winter, The Wind Blow” soundtrack syndrome is predicted to dominate the chart again next week as Girls’ Generation’s leader Taeyeon’s fourth soundtrack single, “And One,” is set to debut on the March 7 episode.

KBS drama, “IRIS 2,” was expected to be big competition for “Winter” as it stars B2ST member Yoon Doojoon. The action-packed thriller earned a 9.5% viewer rating, which earned it a No. 3 spot for ratings in the Wednesday/Thursday drama battle on March 7. Still, there’s no denying its soundtrack is a hit with with Davichi’s powerful piano ballad, “Don’t You Know,” rises to No. 6 this week; up one spot. Noel’s soundtrack single, “How Are You” drops to No. 19 from its former No. 11.

B2ST also contributed to the “IRIS 2″ soundtrack with the track, “Black Paradise,” at No. 15 this week. The song is produced by BEAST’s Yong Jun Hyung and Kim Tae Joon (who also produced their bandmate Yang Yo Seob’s “Caffiene”) and is a powerful hip-hop number with piano melodies. The genre combo emphasizes the tension and thrill of the drama’s scenes.

Elsewhere on the chart, SHINee’s comeback single “Dream Girl” stays on top only falling one spot to No. 4 while Huh Gak and Yoo Seung Woo’s duet “Monodrama” rounds out the Top 5. BAE CHI GI and Ailee’s former No. 1 “Shower Of Tears” falls four spots to no. 8 in its eighth week on the chart. Huh Gak’s “1440″ rises one spot to No. 8; just a position away from its No. 7 peak. Leessang’s “Tears” falls three spots to No. 9. TEEN TOP earns another Top 10 single with their new track “Miss Right” rising 14 spots as official promotions begin.

New Bench Campaign For Korean Stars Siwon And Donghae

Bench really knows how to be timely, riding the huge K-pop wave in the Philippines. Proof that the brand is in tune with the sign of the times, late last year Bench has signed and brought in two members of South Korea’s pop boy band Super Junior to the Philippines to endorse the brand: Siwon and Donghae.

Siwon and Donghae, and the rest of the members of Super Junior have won the world over and have most especially made an impact to a large K-pop fan niche here in Manila. But before becoming Bench’s billboard stars, Siwon and Donghae were already celebrities of Chinese postage stamps. This 2013, the retail brand is releasing a new campaign perfect for summer.

Together with Bench, Siwon and Donghae give men’s dressing a “bright idea.” With summer being a period of celebration, adding a few unexpected hues and details into your outfit is only appropriate. The new collection brings out 2013’s lucky color: emerald. A green pair of jeans can make things a little bit more sartorially charming.

Last year, Bench came out with a cotton T-shirt that says “Sorry Sorry” on it—a song popularized by Super Junior. This year, the brand comes out with another collection of tees with Super Junior song titles and lyrics like “It’s You”, “Have A Good Time” (which is a lyric of the song “Free, Sexy, And Single”), and “Over”. Get your K-pop on, and dress up your basic denims with these unique threads in colorful shades of Crayola red, pale lavender, and navy blue while singing along Super Junior’s songs.

Bench continues to surprise Manila with its fresh take on pop culture from the world over. This summer, be sure to incorporate today’s K-pop hits from Super Junior’s Siwon and Donghae to your outfit.
